• Diagnostic for non working tachometer

I was just wondering if there was a way to run a diagnostic on a non working tach. I have a 94 xp and the tach is not working. I have found a good price on a used tach, but don't know if that is my problem. Is there a way to check/test whether or not it is the gauge or the wiring. Can I use a multimeter and check voltage or resistance while the engine is running and it should read varying quantities and varying rpm's????

Thanks,
Kevin

I have the same problem with my 94 XP. Anyone out there know how to troubleshoot the tach?

Thanks!

Other than checking to see if it powers up when you start the motor, there really isn't anything else to check. Either the guage works, or it doesn't. It picks up it's signal from a wire from the mpem. Other than good connections and power, there isn't much else to check.

Depending on the Jet ski. On the XP Sea-doo 94 you can check with a mulitmeter (or oscillosope) set on AC volts, that your getting a AC voltage signal to the tacho. ( signal wire & neutral). If your not getting a signal then the problem is possibly else where. You can also check that you have a 12v DC supply at the tacho.

what color wire(signal/power) do I need to check for the AC voltage.

Thanks,

purple wire is the 12 vdc power source of the tachometer
black wire is the ground
gray wire is the pulse signal from the mpem
