  • Leaking Exhaust?

    Bryan or Bill,

I posted a question a few weeks ago about my oil injector possibly leaking. I was getting exhaust looking soot on my flywheel. As soon as I said "soot", everybody immediatly said "exhaust leak".

I agree, it looks like exhaust gas but I don't see how it is spraying in that location. I have a 97 SPX with a Factory Pipe Spec 1. If you look at the blue coupler, even if it were to leak where the pipe mates the exhaust would not spray on the flywheel cover.

Is it possible that the oil injector could make that kind of soot deposit?

Unless the blue coupler had a hole in the bottom (which it does not) I don't see how it can deposit exhaust gas on the flywheel cover.

    Any ideas?

    John,
Well for starters, I was assuming that you had a stock pipe with the steel coupler-clamp, which often leaks gases onto the mag cover.

Leaky Oil injectors typicall leave wet deposits. Not dry "soot".

If you carefully look at the exhaust system with the motor running, you should be able to see any exhaust gasses that may be leaking from a pipe or coupler.

Other than that, I really don't know what might cause soot to be on your magneto cover.

Is it soot, or is it rubber powder from a broken motor mount? grasp the exhaust and push and pull firmly on the pipe. This should reveal a bad motor mount fairly easily.

Pushed and pulled, motor moves about 1/16th of and inch side to side. No broken mount.
