Ive got a 2000 SeaDoo DI motor that I recently installed a Reman SBT crank. After about 18hrs of use (from my girlfriend) the engine completely locked up. This ski NEVER sees WOT. After removal of the engine I found the cases virtually sawed in half. Upon separation of the cases I found the smaller crank bearing, next to counter balancer gear, with a broken cage. Now I am assuming that a part of the cage from the bearing found its way into the mesh of the counter balancer gear, and the gear on the crank. Destroying the counter balancer, and the cases. WRONNGGGGGGG>>>>> AFTER THOROUGH INVERSTIGATION AND A REPLY FROM JOHN K. I REALIZED I SHOULD LOOK INTO THIS A LITTLE MORE BEFORE POINTING THE FINGER, I DID COME TO THE CONCLUSION THAT LACK OF LUBE IN THE CB CAVITY CAUSED THIS. Like john said, the gears heated up and destroyed the small bearing on the crank. All the other bearings are like new<<<<<<<<< I sell many SBT engines to my customers and thus far and have had good experiences with all of them. And will continue to do so. I APPOLOGIZE TO ALL OF SBT'S STAFF for offensive actions I took by posting this on there site. And pointing fingers at a bad crank bearing, that was not the case. This is truly a great site for the PWC enthusiast, and helped me come to this conclusion. I am a man of honesty and will admit when I am wrong. Thanks SBT.

Re: 2000 SeaDoo GTX DI Crank Failure
OUCH!! Yhea, I agree. I have never seen the CB gears that torn up before (and i have seen my fair share of massive failures)
Did it destroy the bottom half too?
Good luck finding 951 cases, let alone DI..Dan Solie -

Re: 2000 SeaDoo GTX DI Crank Failure
Have you called and talked to SBT about this?
Yhea, OEM's won't accept SBT or Hotrods as a core, has to be OEM.
I have an OEM carb'd crank core if you need it... I also have quite a few used (but good) CB shafts if the DI's are the same as carb'd (I think they are).Dan Solie -

Re: 2000 SeaDoo GTX DI Crank Failure
In my professional opinion, it looks like a typical 947 that someone put together and forgot to put the oil in the CB gear reservior. Once the gears start to self destruct, they begin to push metal fragments out of the seals and into the bearings. This then results in the rapid failure of the associated bearing(s). Thoughtful, honest and careful disassembly of the crank will show which way the debris came through the oil seals and what part failed first. My diagnosis is based on your pictures alone, including one with rust, and would need closer examination and disassembly fully determine the failure.Last edited by John Kubiak; 10-29-2008, 12:03 AM.John Kubiak

Re: 2000 SeaDoo GTX DI Crank Failure
Thank you for your professional opinion John, I now believe that this was the case. The oil was added. 1.4oz. at the time of rebuild, but there is certainly no sign of it now. Im guessing I had a bad CB shaft seal and it leaked into the compressor, then into the oil tank. Thanks again.Last edited by tjcz71; 10-30-2008, 10:16 PM.

Re: 2000 SeaDoo GTX DI Crank Failure
Can you post pictures of the crankcase mating surfaces? Also, what kind of sealer did you use when you sealed it up?John Kubiak
