My 97 Seadoo XP has a 787. Try to start it won't make a complete turn. Like something is stopping it. I remove the plugs and cranks great. I installed new battery for that size engine. I jumped the relay but still the same thing. I can push the starter button in and out fast and sometimes & the engine will start cranking and start and runs smooth. But mostly only when I have the plugs out. The Seadoo has new battery and new starter from SBT. Does the rave valves have anything to do with this maybe? This seadoo has been a p.i.t.a. for me. If it isn't one thing with this ski it's something else. It's like it is getting too much pressure maybe, since I remove the plugs and it turns over great. This is not a battery issue since I have jumped it with another battery thinking maybe this new battery was bad. So it is not a battery issue. Does anyone have a suggestion. I asked about the raves, because I don't know if they have a play in this. Someone help me out here. Thanks

Re: 97 Seadoo XP Starting Problem
First let me say please do not jump start this ski you will fry the mpeg. Sound to me like the starter is weak needs brushes. the flywheel on this ski is known for teeth grinding off thus starter binding until it bends the starter shaft or just quits turning over. pull the starter and reach in and feel the flywheel teeth if their ok replace the starter.94 gtx, 96XP, 97XP,04 GTC SC,05 RXT & RXP

Rocky, can you read? I put a new starter on it. I did not jump the battery, I put another one on. Your response is absolutely of no help. Re: 97 Seadoo XP Starting Problem
Did you check the flywheel when you put the new starter on. if the teeth on the flywheel are ground down which the 800 is known for the starter will bind as it trys to jump teeth and will break a bendix, bend a starter shaft,or just won't turn over completely. you can turn it by hand and it will free the starter from the flywheel. then you can try it again bro..
If you decide to check the flywheel and it is ground down you will need to pull the front cover and clean the metal off the mag cup and pick up.94 gtx, 96XP, 97XP,04 GTC SC,05 RXT & RXP

Re: 97 Seadoo XP Starting Problem
You can also check the condition of the positive cable feeding the starter. If it's corroded, you will have substantial signal loss, and the starter will not be operating at full capacity.Dan Solie -

Re: 97 Seadoo XP Starting Problem
Any chance that the woodruff key on the crank slipped and the flywheel is just spinning on the crank. This is what mine did. When there was no plugs in it spun over just fine, put my finger over the plug hole and it would stop spinning completely. Try replacing the small woodruff key way on the shaft by pulling off the front mag cover and pulling the flywhee. Let me know.

Re: 97 Seadoo XP Starting Problem
The key does cause problems, but his problem it won't turn over completly it stops no flywheel turning, a sheared key will allow the flywheel to spin not turning the motor, the 787's are known for grinding the flywheel teeth and binding when it trys to jump teeth. I have repaired a dozen or so, thinking it is just a starter problem.94 gtx, 96XP, 97XP,04 GTC SC,05 RXT & RXP
