  • 98 GSX LTD backfire

98 GSX LTD backfires out the exhaust, LOUD. Blew out the exhaust baffle. Motor turns and before it can start backfires. There were 2 motors for this year, white and silver. This motor is silver but the id plate had tape on it like it was painted. Nice paint job, I would say the original color was still silver. Front flywheel is on right (timed). Can the mpem do this if it is the wrong one? There are 2 with this ski and the one in it is the so called new/used one. The other one supposedly is no good. Didn't think of using it before I pulled the motor. Mpem part number does not match for the year of the ski with silver motor. Just would like some opinions before I start buying mpems. Thanks for any help.

      Re: 98 GSX LTD backfire

I checked the flywheel against one from a 99 GSXltd. It was identical to it which scares me a little. I know the mpem's are different. I never had the cup off but someone else had worked on it before me.

Has the MPEM # been superceeded? Post up the part #.

By backfiring, you could have also damaged your reeds.

Another cause of backfire is overcranking. The fuel by trying to get a motor to start (if it's not starting) will go into the exhaust, then into the waterbox. It will become a vapor. Then, when the ski finally does start, the hot exhaust gases ignite the vapors in the waterbox, scaring the cr*p out of you!! This can damage the baffles in the waterbox, which then then cause your exhaust to not have enough backpressure (which can then cause additional bakfires)..

Note, the above theroy only applies to when you crank the motor A LOT! Like drain a battery or two..

          mpem 278-001-362

This mpem also has a 3 amp fuse in it for acc. As far as I can tell 2000, 2001, 2002 GTX's have a 3amp fuse in it. This was quick research on my part I could be wrong. Is it possible to tell what year the engine is from it's numbers?

I am not showing that part # as a valid number at all! You sure you typed it right?

            The 2 part #'s for the 98 GSX-L's are.
