  • 580 Flywheel Identification

I've got a 1990 Sea Doo SP with a yellow 580 motor. The ring gear went bad so I bought another flywheel off ebay. The ski wouldn't crank. After exchanging emails with the seller, turns out the flywheel is from a 1992 SP with a white motor. From what I can by searching the forums, a white motor flywheel won't work on a yellow motor.

So, I find I local salvage yard, drive 2 hours (Atlanta traffic sucks) and arrive home with what they tell me is a flywheel for a yellow motor. Ski still won't crank. After comparing the numbers on the flywheels I suspect the salvage yard lied to me.

I need help identifying what flywheels I have now so I can make sure the next one will be correct. Here are the numbers.

    original flywheel that the ski ran with - 032000 - 7001 11JX

    eBay flywheel - 032000 - 7091 2MY

    salvage yard flywheel 032000 - 7091 9MX

Next time just press the ring gear off of the flywheel and put it onto the flywheel that does work.

Use lots of red loc-Tite so it won't come off without a press.

If you set both flywheels on a bench and you have the key slots orientated the same. You can see the difference between the yellow 'wheel and the white 'wheel, by noticing the different location of the magnets in relationship to the key way.

I did consider swapping the ring gears. However, I don't have a press. I called my local SeaDoo dealer, but they have a policy of not working on anything that is older than 10 years.

I see the difference your talking about with regards to the keyway/magnet position. It doesn't look like much. I guess it doesn't take much though. :)

I was hoping someone could interpret the numbers on the flywheels, so if I take the one from the salvage yard back I can swap it for the right one. I'll just see if I can find one with the same numbers as my damaged one.

There are about 8 different sets of numbers. Nobody I know has a chart to go by the numbers, as those numbers are Nippendenso numbers, not SD part numbers.

Uh, an inch difference is huge ! That is about 20-25 degrees of retard.

I see. That makes sense. I saw this post and thought maybe someone had a chart.

I'm going back tommorrow to try and match up my damage one. Now that I know what to look for, it shouldn't be too hard. Thanks for the help.

            Just an follow-up.

Went back to the salvage yard today and found a flywheel with the "7001" numbers on it. Keyway/magnet position looked to be the same. They let me swap it for the incorrect one I bought.

Installed it and the ski fired right up. Thanks again for the comments and help.
