96 xp weak spark

I have an 1996 XP with the 787 engine. it acts like it is misfiring at low speeds. runs ok wide open throttle. I went through the carbs and installed a set of SBT kits and that made matters worse. it was flooding real bad so i put the old diaphrams back in. I check the spark and it is real weak. I have to hold it real close to ground to even see a spark.checked all grouinds and connections and all is fine. anyone else with this problem. sounds like something is breaking down. these parts are to costly to just start replacing.

them SBT carb kits do sux *** dont they . all the good things SBT does they should be ashamed to put out such a crappy carb kit .

your weak spark could be anything , start by making sure all conections are clean and not rusty , the grounds on the bottom of the coil get rusty and will mess you up a lot . make sure you have a good battery . good battery cables . your motor starts and runs off your battery .try unpluging the rectifire and see if you have good spark .

Thanks for the info I'll try that this afternoon. I just got a manual so I'm gonna try to test the coil pick up.. But I thought I read somewhere that the charging system didn't have anything to do with the firing.

The "charging system" doesn't have anything to do with the firing if the rectifier is good and not sending noise to interfer with the cdi, but, what has the charging system have to do with the ignition trigger pick up that sends the signal to the ignition to fire the coil?

I doubt the problem is the ignition pickup, or it wouldn't run good at higher rpms.

The cdi relies on the 12V from the battery for it's power. Maybe that the coil is weak ?

BTW, did you snip the plug wires back for a good connection at the sparkplug caps?

I did cut about an inch off the end of the wires. Thinking maybe its the coil or the cdi. Gonna wait until I can get one in to try it before i have to buy it. Does anyone know of a good place to buy Coils or CdI's other than a dealer.
