    Battery not charging

    Hi,
    My 1994 SL750 does not seem to be charging the battery when it is running. The MF display shows less than 12V, even when running. What might be wrong with it?
    Also, when I start it out of the water, there is a bad rattling noise coming from the rear - what is that, and should it be there?
    Oh yeah, what is the horsepower rating of this PWC?

    Are you sure you have a good battery?

    Factory was 80hp.

    The battery is charged from the magneto, as several other things run off it as well [ignition].

      Some rattling is expected... but [without it running] you should look at the wear ring and prop. If either are seriously chewed up or bent... you are out of balance and hearing things slap around inside as they need replaced / rebalanced.

        dmould, First, you need to verify that the battery can take a charge. Pull it out of the ski, stick it on a low amp charger (2 amp max) for a couple hours, then let it sit for an hour, then check the voltage, It should be 12.2 or better. If the batt wont take a charge (ie wont draw any amps) get a new batt.

        Once you have figured out that the batt is good, pop it back in the ski, connect a volt meter directly to the batt terminals, start engine and rev alittle, voltage should read above 13. If not, open the elec box and verify htat there is no water in there and that all of the grounds are secure.
        If all of this checks OK, then you either need a voltage regulator, or a stator. My memory fails me right now, so I cant recall the color of the charging coil leads. Try the other stuff first, and let me know.
        BTW when you are reconnecting the batt, install ground first, when you go to install the pos, make it a quick swift, sure connection. If you wiggle the terminal around and cause sparks, your MFD wont work. If this happens, disconnect batt for a minute, then carefully reattach, MFD should work.

          Thanks for the info. Turns out it was the voltage regulator. I changed it, and now it is working great!
