  • Kawi 1100 stx DI plug fouling

new engine,(SBT) starts and runs ok
will not get up to speed
Did all the breakin procedures with 50:1 oil mix
Rear cyl, when I pull the plug its soaked with oil and badly fouled out
put in new plug same thing
occasionally the engine will "catch" on that third cyclinder and rpms come up but still not to speed.
    Thoughts????

Are you useing the right plugs? The plugs for that boat are NGK PZFR7GG ("VX" Platinum Plugs: $15.99 a plug) If yes, you are useing the right plugs, check your gap. If you have done all that, check for spark on each plug. The D.I. has (3) ignition coils, one for each cylinder. If you have spark, Take the boat in. The computer on that boat has 45 diffent codes and only Kawasaki can plug into the computer. Good Luck

Re: Kawi 1100 stx DI plug fouling

      thanx for the reply
since then have done quite a bit more more research... the software is available for just $3.50!!!
however the cable hookup for a computer to the ski is 108.00
I also found out, on the kawasaki injectors, that they are specifically matched to a particular cylinder with the injectors serial number and performance characteristics loaded into the skis brainbox!!! If they get mixed up or changed they have to be reprogramed in. I won't be up to the lake until this weekend to run some further checks and tests and I bought the software.
The service manual has very specific set up info as it varies the spark etc with the rpms and it also shows current and previous fault codes. this should prove interesting.........(after I get done with all this I may apply to work on the space shuttle, YIKES...)

Yes you are right about that spark. I know when the engin is running above 3000 RPM's, the spark is 10 times per stroke. I just traded my 2000 STX-D.I. this year. In the time I have had to replace the E.M.M. ( $1,100) and the stader ($350). You are right about the sofeware, I talled to Kawasaki the other day and said, " you can buy the sofeware ". Good luck and if you can, let me know what you find... One last think; when was the last time you changed you fuel filter? The filter is big and you should get long life out of it but should be replaced every 80-85 hours.Good Luck

Re: Kawi 1100 stx DI plug fouling

You need to get the correct part # from the specific shop manual for that year ski and engine
Its listed near the front under required tools and equipment
You will also need to purchase the software manual for the software
              The disc was like 3.89
The software manual was about 17.00
              the cable was 106.oo
there is also another small auxillary cable that attches to the throttle position sensor 16.00 I was able to read all of the previous fault codes. none of which were current issues
Make ABSOLUTLEY sure that you tell them you need the latest version of the software I ordered by the part number from my service manual and it was the original version for that ski. When I put my laptop on my ski some of the reports and test modes say " YOU MUST HAVE VERSION XXXX TO RUN THESE TESTS" apparently the previous owner had replaced the brain box and it has several internal upgrades that the older soft ware doesn"t recognize.

By the way I found out why I had the fouling plug problem...
a 1/2 inch piece of the the lower ring on that cylinder snapped and I lost compression (30PSI)
I took it into the shop and removed the intakes to see why the compression was so bad & to inspect what I could see of the piston
              SURPRISE!!!
1 1/2 hours on the engine
